Beyond cooler weather, shorter days, and football games, the arrival of fall means apples, pumpkins, and a host of other delicious fall fruits and vegetables.

This is often the time of year I find myself baking more and enjoying the spicy, sweet aromas that waft out of the oven. Many of these seasonal recipes call for warm flavor notes of pumpkin pie spice.

Years ago, when I began buying my spices from a vendor at our local farmers market, I noticed what he did when I requested pumpkin pie spice: he simply dumped a little cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice onto his old-fashioned scale, stirred them together, and bagged them up.

Of course, I knew that pumpkin pie spice was a blend of these spices – although some people do use cloves instead of or in addition to nutmeg – but it suddenly occurred to me that I could do this at home with the spices I already had in my cupboard!

Moreover, I could adjust to the proportions I really liked and make as little or much as I needed. Once you make it yourself, you may never purchase pumpkin pie spice again.

Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Yield: 3+ tablespoons (recipe may be scaled as needed)
Use this spice blend for any recipe calling for pumpkin pie spice. Beyond muffins, quick breads, and pies, try the flavorful mix sprinkled on oatmeal, applesauce, lattes – even roasted winter squash.
Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1½ teaspoons (½ tablespoon) ground nutmeg (see notes)
  • 1½ teaspoons (½ tablespoon) ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
  2. Store in air tight container and use wherever pumpkin pie spice is called for.
Notes
  • If possible, freshly grating the nutmeg will provide an extra flavor boost. And while this recipe is a great way to “clean out” your spice cabinet, fresh spices will yield the most flavor.

I usually wing it using mostly cinnamon with a bit of ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves in it/ probably never comes out the same twice! So, I made this up for the sake of ease in the future but did add 1/4 tsp of cloves to it since my wing it mixing includes a pinch of that too.

Thank you! I was looking at buying a tiny bottle of pumpkin pie spice at Walmart yesterday for $4.50! I about died. I would way rather make my own. I’d love for you to come link up over on my cooking blog. cass-eats.blogspot.com
