Dulce de Leche Latte

Since I stumbled upon the overwhelming hit of Crock Pot Dulce de Leche a few years ago, the kids regularly enjoy this caramel-like dip on sliced apples and we drizzle it over ice cream and pound cake.  One reader loves it as a topping for Crunchy Top Apples and Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal. I even concocted the following homemade version of a coffee house favorite. Usually, I skip the whipped cream, but every once in a while it really hits the spot. (And during a recent Susquehanna Style photo shoot, Hannah went a little crazy!)

Click here for the dulce de leche recipe which uses sweetened condensed milk as the one-and-only ingredient.  There’s a fun backstory, too.  The cook time specified for the syrup consistency is best for using in lattes.

My friend, Lynne, at 365 Days of Baking uses the above-linked recipe for homemade dulce de leche to make her own flavored creamer. She blends 1-1/2 (8-ounce) jars of the cooked dulce de leche, 1-1/4 cups of milk, and 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract. From there, she pours into a jar, refrigerates, and shakes well prior to using. She says it “rocks!”

Dulce de Leche Latte
If you have an espresso maker, you can use espresso instead of the strong coffee.
Ingredients
  • 1 cup of strong, hot coffee
  • 3/4 cup non-fat milk (could use 2% or whole for a richer latte)
  • 1-2 tablespoons dulce de leche, or to taste
  • whipped cream, optional
Instructions
  1. Heat milk in microwave or on stovetop until very hot.
  2. Pour into brewed coffee along with the dulce de leche.
  3. Stir well, top with whipped cream if using, and enjoy!

You can order Caramel condensed milk from South Africa. In Canada there were online shopping companies – Out of Africa Trading and Jacaranda trading. The Caramel Condensed milk is a Nestle product. It will save a lot of cooking time.

I need to get some sweetened condensed milk and try this. Think I will add some sea salt to it to make salted caramel latte. Mmmmmm!
