Favorite Soup Recipes

It’s hard to beat the warming comfort of a hearty bowl of soup.  To qualify as the best of the best (in my humble opinion😉), a contender must be satisfying enough to serve for dinner and loaded with healthy components.  It must also improve with age, making leftovers for lunch something to truly anticipate and savor all over again.

As a certified soup lover, I’m always working on new and improved recipes.  But after all these years plugging away in The Fountain Avenue Kitchen, it occurred to me that I have a solid list of tried-and-true recipes that have ranged from best sellers at local restaurants to consistent hits with readers, family, and friends.

I figured why not assemble these standouts, which truly offer a little something for everyone, in one convenient location.  For easy meal planning, may I suggest starting at the top of the list and working your way down?  (Bottom to top works, too🙃)  And please let me know if you have a personal favorite!

    Thank you for posting these wonderful-sounding soups. I have made variations of a couple, and am eager to try new ones on the list. Here’s how I freeze leftover soup for my husband and me: I place silicone muffin cups on a cookie sheet and fill them full – put in freezer until solid, pop them out and bag them 2 to a snack bag and label. (Two make a perfect serving.) I have a container in the freezer to hold them until we want soup for lunch. We don’t get tired of left overs and each of us are free to choose which kind we’re hungry for.

    I was wondering if you have a recipe for the Seafood Chowder which Kegel’s restaurant used to serve. Every visit to Lancaster included a stop at Kegel’s for lunch. That chowder was marvelous! The day after our youngest was born in 1980 at Lancaster Osteopathic, my husband stopped at Kegel’s on his way to the hospital and picked up a carton for me as a surprise. Sweet man!

      I love so many parts of your comment, Elaine! The muffin cup portions (complete with bags that allow everyone to pick according to preference) are brilliant. And I love the story about your husband buying you the chowder. I have many memories of eating at Kegel’s with my family, but sadly never got the soup recipe. Perhaps someone with an insider track will read this comment someday and share! 🙂

    Hello Ann;

    Yesterday I was hungry for a soup. I went to your listing of recipes and found the Curried Butternut Squash and Red Lentil Soup recipe. Since I had a squash on hand, was hoping my supply of lentils was a enough, I was set to go. It is delicious. I didn’t have the raw ginger, but substituted the powder with very good results.

    Thank you for this recipe. I will make it again and hope to share with one of my daughters who had just given me her version of Asparagus Soup.

      I’m delighted to read this, Dorothy. It’s especially nice when you have everything on hand. Thanks for mentioning the ginger substitution…and sounds like a good trade with your daughter!

    Thanks for this great list, Ann! I’m a soup lover too—I like eating them and I like making them too. I have several favorites, but an unlikely one is a celery soup I adapted from an Epicurious recipe (for one thing, I cut the butter way back). Celery is such a humble vegetable, and this recipe has only very simple ingredients, but it is uncommonly delicious! If you are interested, I’ll be happy to share.
