Are you ready?  I certainly have a calendar, but every year the holidays seem to sneak up on me.  As I count the items on my mental to-do list and the stress level creeps upward, I remind myself how important it is to simply slow down and savor the true meaning of the season.  One of my favorite ways to relax and recharge is so simple yet always feels somewhat indulgent.

Sitting down with my favorite holiday latte, a freshly sharpened pencil, and the daily crossword puzzle beats a power nap.  For a few minutes, I think nothing of my long list of tasks and refuel with something creamy and sweet.

Holiday lattes are all the rage at cafes far and wide, but there’s no reason we can’t pull off a homemade version that’s every bit as satisfying–and for a fraction of the cost.  (And who doesn’t welcome a little savings this time of year!)  The following eggnog-infused cup of deliciousness requires just two ingredients and can be enjoyed well into the new year.  You can use your favorite store-bought caramel sauce, although this foolproof 7-minute caramel sauce offers a tasty homemade option.

For the tea drinkers in the crowd, I highly recommend using eggnog in place of milk and your usual sweetener–with a chai teabag. (I use Turkey Hill Dairy’s Egg Nog, which is rich, creamy, and widely available.)  My sons, who aren’t fans of eggnog alone, think this tastes a lot like their favorite chai latte…yes, the expensive one from the coffee shop. 😏

So grab your favorite mug, sharpen your pencil, and grab a few minutes of “me time” amidst the hustle and bustle of the season.  May your holidays be merry and bright and filled to the brim with love and laughter…

Cheers!  ❤️

Why pay five bucks for a holiday themed coffee (or tea) when you can make it at home!

Caramel Eggnog Creamer

This recipe can be easily adapted to make any amount desired. The proportions are simply one part caramel sauce to two parts eggnog. For an extra hint of holiday spice, add a pinch or two of freshly grated nutmeg. A splash of rum offers a tasty adult option.

Yield – 3/4 cup

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (90 grams) caramel sauce (I love using the 7-minute sauce)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) eggnog (I like Turkey Hill Dairy's Egg Nog)

Instructions

  1. In a jar or other container (one that you can easily pour from is helpful), stir together the caramel sauce and eggnog.
  2. Cover and refrigerate for use as a creamer for coffee or tea, giving a quick stir before using.
